My Dog Loves Parrot Toys

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Every time I buy some new parrot toys for my bird Kiwi, my dog has a fit. She will stop at nothing to steal every new toy I buy. There are times I have witnessed my bird commandeer one of my dogs toys and defend it fiercely. There is no question that the both of them are spoiled and will stop at nothing to steal from each other. The behavior seems strange between the two of them however I can’t help but think that they are friends. Sometimes Kiwi will fly from her perch and land on my dogs back just to go for a short ride. This always makes me laugh and provides the whole family with entertainment. I don’t think it is uncommon for different species of animals to share a bond or friendship.

Now if I could just keep my dog from stealing my birds foot toys and chewing them up then I think that we would all be much happier.

Are Parrot Climbing Nets Safe

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

With the large selection of parrot toys and accessories available today, toy safety is something that is not often discussed. Every pet parrot owner should regularly inspect their pet parrots toys for wear, breakage, and defects. One popular accessory, the parrot climbing net is often thought of as unsafe. While this type of item could be hazardous simply because the risk of entrapment is high when made of the wrong materials.

Parrot climbing nets should be made of natural fiber such as untreated sisal or palm fiber. Another great fiber to use is natural cotton rope with 0% synthetic fibers and no center core strand. These types of fibers are safe because the chance of entrapment or entanglement is low due to their natural construction.

When considering a climbing net, make sure it is appropriately sized for your parrot. Larger birds will require thicker rope, 1/2″ or even 5/8″ diameter. Smaller species will find 1/4″ to 5/16″ fiber rope comfortable. Finally, hole spacing should be larger than your pet parrot for safety reasons.
